Naša je šahovnica odavno već prešla granice Lijepe naše, postavši naš jasan simbol. Po njoj smo prepoznatljivi. Ona je i jedan od najstarijih nacionalnih simbola u cijeloj Europi.

Pojavljuje se šahovnica prvi put 1508. godine na portretu Fridrika III. Habsburškog, koji je naslikao Hans Burgkmair. U povelji o izboru nadvojvode Ferdinanda I. za hrvatskoga kralja dobiva i diplomatsku potvrdu, a datum je bio 1. siječnja 1527. godine.

To je ono što sigurno znamo, no što je s legendama i pričama o šahovnici?

Neki su tvrdili kako je kod nas stigla iz Irana, no drugi pak vele kako je za sve "kriv" kralj Držislav Stjepan.

On je, pripovijedaju oni koji (valjda) znaju, bio vrstan šahista. Zahvaljujući toj vještini i znanju, vele dalje, uspio je spasiti vlastiti život, ali i steći prevlast nad mnogim povijesnim teritorijima.

A priča ide ovako.

Negdje u desetom stoljeću srednjovjekovni hrvatski kralj Držislav Stjepan borio se protiv Mlečana. Oni su htjeli Dalmaciji, on je nije htio dati.

U jednoj od bitaka, veli legenda, Držislav je zarobljen. Mleci su ga odveli u tamnicu u Veneciju.

Tamošnji dužd, veli opet legenda, bio je strastveni šahist. Doznavši kako mu je protivnik na "istoj liniji", ponudio mu je tri partije, ako pobjedi - kazao je - pustit će ga na slobodu.

Držislav je pristao.

Sve ostalo je, vele, upravo to - legenda.

Držislav je "rasturio", dobio dužda, a kada se slobodan vratio u domovinu - navodno je postavio na svoj štit šahovnicu, kako bi ga podsjećala čemu duguje život.

Sve je ovo, ponavljamo, legenda, navodno, raširena negdje u 19. stoljeću, no slatka je, priznajte. Baš lijepa priča.

Naša je šahovnica odavno već prešla granice Lijepe naše, postavši naš jasan simbol. Po njoj smo prepoznatljivi. Ona je i jedan od najstarijih nacionalnih simbola u cijeloj Europi.

Pojavljuje se šahovnica prvi put 1508. godine na portretu Fridrika III. Habsburškog, koji je naslikao Hans Burgkmair. U povelji o izboru nadvojvode Ferdinanda I. za hrvatskoga kralja dobiva i diplomatsku potvrdu, a datum je bio 1. siječnja 1527. godine.

To je ono što sigurno znamo, no što je s legendama i pričama o šahovnici?

Neki su tvrdili kako je kod nas stigla iz Irana, no drugi pak vele kako je za sve "kriv" kralj Držislav Stjepan.

On je, pripovijedaju oni koji (valjda) znaju, bio vrstan šahista. Zahvaljujući toj vještini i znanju, vele dalje, uspio je spasiti vlastiti život, ali i steći prevlast nad mnogim povijesnim teritorijima.

A priča ide ovako.

Negdje u desetom stoljeću srednjovjekovni hrvatski kralj Držislav Stjepan borio se protiv Mlečana. Oni su htjeli Dalmaciji, on je nije htio dati.

U jednoj od bitaka, veli legenda, Držislav je zarobljen. Mleci su ga odveli u tamnicu u Veneciju.

Tamošnji dužd, veli opet legenda, bio je strastveni šahist. Doznavši kako mu je protivnik na "istoj liniji", ponudio mu je tri partije, ako pobjedi - kazao je - pustit će ga na slobodu.

Držislav je pristao.

Sve ostalo je, vele, upravo to - legenda.

Držislav je "rasturio", dobio dužda, a kada se slobodan vratio u domovinu - navodno je postavio na svoj štit šahovnicu, kako bi ga podsjećala čemu duguje život.

Sve je ovo, ponavljamo, legenda, navodno, raširena negdje u 19. stoljeću, no slatka je, priznajte. Baš lijepa priča.
