Mate Parlov u jednoj se stvari razlikovao od većine umirovljenih sportskih šampiona. Nitko ga nikada nije čuo da se žali zato što ga ne poštuju koliko je zaslužio.

Naše ostarjele vedete u pravilu se teško mire s činjenicom da ih nakon silaska sa scene više nitko ne šljivi: matični savezi ne sjete im se ni rođendana, novinari ih više ne potežu za rukav, ne stižu im pozivnice za svečane akademije i glamurozne evente, jedva da se više itko za njima okreće na ulici. Mate s tim nije imao nikakvih problema, dapače, on kao da je prodisao onoga trenutka kad je napustio ring.

Otvorio je mali kafić u središtu svoga malog grada i tamo kuhao grozne kave, što ni najmanje nije naškodilo omiljenosti njegova lokala. S gostima, a oni su uglavnom bili neki običan, anoniman svijet, nije evocirao uspomene na dane ponosa i slave, nego ćakulao o novitadama i problemima svakodnevice.

Ni na koga nije gledao s visine, niti ikome držao prodike duboko uvjeren kako ga zlatne medalje kvalificiraju da o svemu ima mišljenje kojemu svi moraju zapljeskati. Da ga je bilo pitati zaslužuje li spomenik, ne bi se ni nasmijao, prije bi se naljutio, jer bi pomislio da ga provociramo.

Mate Parlov bio je čestito čeljade, što je životno dostignuće važnije od svih kolajni kojima su ga u prebogatoj karijeri nakitili. No bio je i najveći sportaš svoga vremena, pa je normalno da mu ljudi koji pamte njegove uspjehe žele iskazati odgovarajuću počast.

Prvi su to učinili Puljani, bez prevelike pompe i, još važnije, bez ikakvih kontroverzi. Naprosto se jedan grad pristojno naklonio svome stanovniku. Pritom se nije čuo ni jedan jedini disonantni glas.

Međutim, u zavičaju velikog sportaša situacija je drukčija. I tamo bi neki htjeli vidjeti spomenik Mati, dok drugi za njega ne žele ni čuti. Ipak, bilo bi nepravedno reći kako su za takvo stanje stvari krivi Imoćani u množini.

Kriv je samo jedan Matin zemljak, Ante Tomić se zove i sa slavnim šampionom dijeli općinu porijekla, samo što je boksač iz Ričica, a pisac iz Prološca. Baš u njegov diktafon Parlov je svojedobno izgovorio onu čuvenu rečenicu "Kako ja mogu biti nacionalist ako sam svjetski prvak?".

Što se mene tiče, ona vrijedi puno više od svake medalje, jer su u njoj komprimirani nadmoćna mudrost i nesvakidašnja srčanost, dakle, vrijednosti rijetke i u krugovima najbriljantnijih intelektualaca.

Tom rečenicom koja je imala težinu klasičnog nokauta Mate je sve kukavičke šupke koji se vole busati u patriotska prsa sastavio s podom. To mu, međutim, mnogi zemljaci ni mrtvom ne mogu oprostiti. I meni je to sasvim u redu.

U slobodnoj zemlji svatko je slobodan njegovati uskogrudnost, mržnju i glupost. Više od takvih njegovatelja, mene nerviraju oni koji spomenik pokušavaju opravdati tvrdnjom da se on podiže isključivo zbog Matinih sportskih zasluga, a ne zbog njegovih uvjerenja. Krivo!

Kad bi to bila istina, onda bi u bronci bilo dovoljno odliti rukavice, a ne lik osobe koja ih je nosila. Kip se podiže čovjeku, a nijednog čovjeka ne može se rezati na fete kao štrucu kruha pa birati komad s hrskavijom koricom. Naprosto se moraš odlučiti jesi li za ugljikohidrate ili nisi.

Odluči li se većina da nije za čovjeka koji je bio dobar kao kruh, nema veze. Konačno, Mati ni ne treba spomenik. Mate jest spomenik.

Mate Parlov u jednoj se stvari razlikovao od većine umirovljenih sportskih šampiona. Nitko ga nikada nije čuo da se žali zato što ga ne poštuju koliko je zaslužio.

Naše ostarjele vedete u pravilu se teško mire s činjenicom da ih nakon silaska sa scene više nitko ne šljivi: matični savezi ne sjete im se ni rođendana, novinari ih više ne potežu za rukav, ne stižu im pozivnice za svečane akademije i glamurozne evente, jedva da se više itko za njima okreće na ulici. Mate s tim nije imao nikakvih problema, dapače, on kao da je prodisao onoga trenutka kad je napustio ring.

Otvorio je mali kafić u središtu svoga malog grada i tamo kuhao grozne kave, što ni najmanje nije naškodilo omiljenosti njegova lokala. S gostima, a oni su uglavnom bili neki običan, anoniman svijet, nije evocirao uspomene na dane ponosa i slave, nego ćakulao o novitadama i problemima svakodnevice.

Ni na koga nije gledao s visine, niti ikome držao prodike duboko uvjeren kako ga zlatne medalje kvalificiraju da o svemu ima mišljenje kojemu svi moraju zapljeskati. Da ga je bilo pitati zaslužuje li spomenik, ne bi se ni nasmijao, prije bi se naljutio, jer bi pomislio da ga provociramo.

Mate Parlov bio je čestito čeljade, što je životno dostignuće važnije od svih kolajni kojima su ga u prebogatoj karijeri nakitili. No bio je i najveći sportaš svoga vremena, pa je normalno da mu ljudi koji pamte njegove uspjehe žele iskazati odgovarajuću počast.

Prvi su to učinili Puljani, bez prevelike pompe i, još važnije, bez ikakvih kontroverzi. Naprosto se jedan grad pristojno naklonio svome stanovniku. Pritom se nije čuo ni jedan jedini disonantni glas.

Međutim, u zavičaju velikog sportaša situacija je drukčija. I tamo bi neki htjeli vidjeti spomenik Mati, dok drugi za njega ne žele ni čuti. Ipak, bilo bi nepravedno reći kako su za takvo stanje stvari krivi Imoćani u množini.

Kriv je samo jedan Matin zemljak, Ante Tomić se zove i sa slavnim šampionom dijeli općinu porijekla, samo što je boksač iz Ričica, a pisac iz Prološca. Baš u njegov diktafon Parlov je svojedobno izgovorio onu čuvenu rečenicu "Kako ja mogu biti nacionalist ako sam svjetski prvak?".

Što se mene tiče, ona vrijedi puno više od svake medalje, jer su u njoj komprimirani nadmoćna mudrost i nesvakidašnja srčanost, dakle, vrijednosti rijetke i u krugovima najbriljantnijih intelektualaca.

Tom rečenicom koja je imala težinu klasičnog nokauta Mate je sve kukavičke šupke koji se vole busati u patriotska prsa sastavio s podom. To mu, međutim, mnogi zemljaci ni mrtvom ne mogu oprostiti. I meni je to sasvim u redu.

U slobodnoj zemlji svatko je slobodan njegovati uskogrudnost, mržnju i glupost. Više od takvih njegovatelja, mene nerviraju oni koji spomenik pokušavaju opravdati tvrdnjom da se on podiže isključivo zbog Matinih sportskih zasluga, a ne zbog njegovih uvjerenja. Krivo!

Kad bi to bila istina, onda bi u bronci bilo dovoljno odliti rukavice, a ne lik osobe koja ih je nosila. Kip se podiže čovjeku, a nijednog čovjeka ne može se rezati na fete kao štrucu kruha pa birati komad s hrskavijom koricom. Naprosto se moraš odlučiti jesi li za ugljikohidrate ili nisi.

Odluči li se većina da nije za čovjeka koji je bio dobar kao kruh, nema veze. Konačno, Mati ni ne treba spomenik. Mate jest spomenik.
