NASA-ini astronomi svemirskim su teleskopom Hubble otkrili najveći komet do sada. Komet nazvan C/2014 UN271 ima površinu veću od Istre, masu od 500 bilijuna tona i trenutno se nalazi na rubu Sunčevog sustava.

Tim astronoma koji koriste Hubble snimio je pet fotografija u kojima se uspio vidjeti i takozvani "šiljak svjetlosti" na mjestu gdje se nalazi jezgra kometa, prenosi CBS News. U kombinaciji s podacima radioteleskopa astronomi su potom utvrdili dimenzije kometa, za koji su ustanovili da ima promjer od čak 136,7 kilometara.

Izazov u mjerenju ovog kometa bilo je razlikovanje čvrste jezgre od ogromne prašnjave kome (magličasti ovoj jezgre kometa) koja ga okružuje. Komet je trenutno predaleko da bi Hubble vizualno prepoznao njegovu jezgru zbog čega su glavni autor istraživanja Man-To Hu i njegov tim napravili računalni model uz pomoć kojeg su izdvojili "sjajni plašt" kometa i potom izračunali veličinu same jezgre.

C/2014 UN271 putuje brzinom od 35.400 kilometara na sat s ruba Sunčevog sustava i sada je od naše zvijezde udaljen manje od 3,2 milijarde kilometara. Znanstvenici su objasnili da se komet nikada neće približiti Suncu na blizini manjoj od 1,6 milijarde kilometara, do koje ionako neće stići prije 2031.

Ovaj komet su još 2010. godine otkrili astronomi Pedro Bernardinelli i Gary Bernstein u Inter-američkom opservatoriju Cerro Tololo u Čileu. No, tada nisu mogli izračunati njegovu veličinu.

- Ovo je nevjerojatan objekt, s obzirom na to koliko je aktivan kada je još toliko udaljen od Sunca, kaže Man-To Hui sa Sveučilišta znanosti i tehnologije u Macauu.

Komet je prvi put uočen kada je bio udaljen 4,8 milijarde kilometara od Sunca, a prema Suncu krenuo je prije više od milijun godina. Astronomi su otkrili da dolazi iz "Oortovog oblaka", mjesta za kojeg se predviđa da je gnijezdo bilijuna kometa.

Koliko je taj dio svemira udaljen, pokazuje podatak da NASA-ine svemirske letjelice Voyager I i Voyager II neće stići do Oortovog oblaka još 300 godina i da bi im trebalo čak 30.000 godina da kroz njega prođu, objasnili su iz NASA-e.

- Uvijek smo pretpostavljali da bi taj komet mogao biti prilično velik, a sad smo to i potvrdili, rekao je David Jewitt, profesor planetarne znanosti i astronomije na Kalifornijskom sveučilištu u Los Angelesu. Nadodao je da zbog otkrića ovog kometa postoje velike šanse za novim otkrićima istih kometa.

- Ovaj komet je doslovno vrh ledene sante za mnoge tisuće kometa koji su preslabi da bi se vidjeli u udaljenijim dijelovima Sunčevog sustava, rekao je Jewitt.

NASA-ini astronomi svemirskim su teleskopom Hubble otkrili najveći komet do sada. Komet nazvan C/2014 UN271 ima površinu veću od Istre, masu od 500 bilijuna tona i trenutno se nalazi na rubu Sunčevog sustava.

Tim astronoma koji koriste Hubble snimio je pet fotografija u kojima se uspio vidjeti i takozvani "šiljak svjetlosti" na mjestu gdje se nalazi jezgra kometa, prenosi CBS News. U kombinaciji s podacima radioteleskopa astronomi su potom utvrdili dimenzije kometa, za koji su ustanovili da ima promjer od čak 136,7 kilometara.

Izazov u mjerenju ovog kometa bilo je razlikovanje čvrste jezgre od ogromne prašnjave kome (magličasti ovoj jezgre kometa) koja ga okružuje. Komet je trenutno predaleko da bi Hubble vizualno prepoznao njegovu jezgru zbog čega su glavni autor istraživanja Man-To Hu i njegov tim napravili računalni model uz pomoć kojeg su izdvojili "sjajni plašt" kometa i potom izračunali veličinu same jezgre.

C/2014 UN271 putuje brzinom od 35.400 kilometara na sat s ruba Sunčevog sustava i sada je od naše zvijezde udaljen manje od 3,2 milijarde kilometara. Znanstvenici su objasnili da se komet nikada neće približiti Suncu na blizini manjoj od 1,6 milijarde kilometara, do koje ionako neće stići prije 2031.

Ovaj komet su još 2010. godine otkrili astronomi Pedro Bernardinelli i Gary Bernstein u Inter-američkom opservatoriju Cerro Tololo u Čileu. No, tada nisu mogli izračunati njegovu veličinu.

- Ovo je nevjerojatan objekt, s obzirom na to koliko je aktivan kada je još toliko udaljen od Sunca, kaže Man-To Hui sa Sveučilišta znanosti i tehnologije u Macauu.

Komet je prvi put uočen kada je bio udaljen 4,8 milijarde kilometara od Sunca, a prema Suncu krenuo je prije više od milijun godina. Astronomi su otkrili da dolazi iz "Oortovog oblaka", mjesta za kojeg se predviđa da je gnijezdo bilijuna kometa.

Koliko je taj dio svemira udaljen, pokazuje podatak da NASA-ine svemirske letjelice Voyager I i Voyager II neće stići do Oortovog oblaka još 300 godina i da bi im trebalo čak 30.000 godina da kroz njega prođu, objasnili su iz NASA-e.

- Uvijek smo pretpostavljali da bi taj komet mogao biti prilično velik, a sad smo to i potvrdili, rekao je David Jewitt, profesor planetarne znanosti i astronomije na Kalifornijskom sveučilištu u Los Angelesu. Nadodao je da zbog otkrića ovog kometa postoje velike šanse za novim otkrićima istih kometa.

- Ovaj komet je doslovno vrh ledene sante za mnoge tisuće kometa koji su preslabi da bi se vidjeli u udaljenijim dijelovima Sunčevog sustava, rekao je Jewitt.

Astronomi otkrili najveći komet do sada, površinom je veći od Istre: ‘Ovo je nevjerojatan objekt‘

NASA-ini astronomi svemirskim su teleskopom Hubble otkrili najveći komet do sada. Komet nazvan C/2014 UN271 ima površinu veću od Istre, masu od 500 bilijuna tona i trenutno se nalazi na rubu Sunčevog sustava.

Tim astronoma koji koriste Hubble snimio je pet fotografija u kojima se uspio vidjeti i takozvani "šiljak svjetlosti" na mjestu gdje se nalazi jezgra kometa, prenosi CBS News. U kombinaciji s podacima radioteleskopa astronomi su potom utvrdili dimenzije kometa, za koji su ustanovili da ima promjer od čak 136,7 kilometara.

Izazov u mjerenju ovog kometa bilo je razlikovanje čvrste jezgre od ogromne prašnjave kome (magličasti ovoj jezgre kometa) koja ga okružuje. Komet je trenutno predaleko da bi Hubble vizualno prepoznao njegovu jezgru zbog čega su glavni autor istraživanja Man-To Hu i njegov tim napravili računalni model uz pomoć kojeg su izdvojili "sjajni plašt" kometa i potom izračunali veličinu same jezgre.

C/2014 UN271 putuje brzinom od 35.400 kilometara na sat s ruba Sunčevog sustava i sada je od naše zvijezde udaljen manje od 3,2 milijarde kilometara. Znanstvenici su objasnili da se komet nikada neće približiti Suncu na blizini manjoj od 1,6 milijarde kilometara, do koje ionako neće stići prije 2031.

Ovaj komet su još 2010. godine otkrili astronomi Pedro Bernardinelli i Gary Bernstein u Inter-američkom opservatoriju Cerro Tololo u Čileu. No, tada nisu mogli izračunati njegovu veličinu.

- Ovo je nevjerojatan objekt, s obzirom na to koliko je aktivan kada je još toliko udaljen od Sunca, kaže Man-To Hui sa Sveučilišta znanosti i tehnologije u Macauu.

Komet je prvi put uočen kada je bio udaljen 4,8 milijarde kilometara od Sunca, a prema Suncu krenuo je prije više od milijun godina. Astronomi su otkrili da dolazi iz "Oortovog oblaka", mjesta za kojeg se predviđa da je gnijezdo bilijuna kometa.

Koliko je taj dio svemira udaljen, pokazuje podatak da NASA-ine svemirske letjelice Voyager I i Voyager II neće stići do Oortovog oblaka još 300 godina i da bi im trebalo čak 30.000 godina da kroz njega prođu, objasnili su iz NASA-e.

- Uvijek smo pretpostavljali da bi taj komet mogao biti prilično velik, a sad smo to i potvrdili, rekao je David Jewitt, profesor planetarne znanosti i astronomije na Kalifornijskom sveučilištu u Los Angelesu. Nadodao je da zbog otkrića ovog kometa postoje velike šanse za novim otkrićima istih kometa.

- Ovaj komet je doslovno vrh ledene sante za mnoge tisuće kometa koji su preslabi da bi se vidjeli u udaljenijim dijelovima Sunčevog sustava, rekao je Jewitt.
